Walmart Launches Alcohol Pickup In Select States

Walmart has announced that customers in 2,000 locations in 29 states can use the retailer’s pickup service for their alcohol purchases.

In states including California, Texas and Florida, shoppers can select from a variety of wine and beer options, including regional or local brands. Select locations will also allow for the pickup of spirits, depending on local laws.

“No matter what’s on your shopping list, Walmart Grocery Pickup is helping our customers keep time in their busy schedules,” Tom Ward, SVP of digital operations, said in a press release. “Now, without ever leaving their car, customers can pick up the perfect bottle of wine for dinner or beer for the big game. That’s something worth raising a glass to.”

The service allows customers to directly search for adult beverages and add them to their cart. Walmart’s personal shoppers will then carefully select each item in the order. During checkout, customers select a window of time they will pick up their order, but if the order includes alcohol, pickup and delivery times may be limited by local law. At the time of pickup, the customer will be required to show valid photo identification verifying that they are at least 21 years of age before receiving the alcohol products in their order.

In addition, Walmart revealed it will be making deliveries of adult beverages from nearly 200 stores across California and Florida, with more states being added in accordance with local and state regulations.

And earlier this month, the retailer announced it is rolling out a new grocery delivery service. The InHome service comes at an introductory price of $19.95 a month, and shoppers have to purchase a $49.95 smart garage door or lock kit that includes free installation and a month of free unlimited delivery of groceries. Walmart Senior Vice President of Membership and InHome Bart Stein said it is a service the retailer plans “to grow and scale aggressively.”
